The first game of the year for the men’s 1st team took place on Wednesday against the Exeter Uni team as part of the U-Polo tournament. Being held at the Jubilee Sports Centre meant that there was plenty of poolside support. A big thank you to everybody who was there!!
In the first quarter, we unfortunately conceded the first goal of the game, as we were still trying to apply our style of play to their game. However, the response to the goal came quick and hard. Our boys managed to score 4 goals in the next 6 minutes of the quarter by playing sensibly. At the end of the quarter the score was 4-1.
The next quarter found us attacking to the deep end, and it continued with the same pace. Now, with the team giving no chance to the opposition; no goals were conceded and 3 goals were scored. The quarter finished 7-1 for Southampton.
In the third quarter our team still managed to be strong and confident, which translated into 3 goals being scored from the Soton lads and zero being scored by the Exeter’s team. The difference grew up to 9 goals (10-1).
The fourth quarter was the most fruitful for our team with 5 goals being scored. During this quarter our team managed to complete many steals and counter attacks. However, as it usually happens when the game speeds up; returning from the attack to the defense starts being slower and mistakes from both sides started to show up; 2 goals – of small significance – were therefore conceded. The final score was 15-3 for Southampton.
A great game for our team, despite not have had much first team training yet. A good display of “Go big or Go BIGGER!”!!
