It was the 10 of Southampton Uni against a strong 7 of Southampton City in what turned out to be a performance which summed up our season.
We began with some beautiful water polo, outgoing captain Finn, social sec Ed and Coach Alex going toe to toe with Soton cities scariest players – Jacob. Goals were exchanged from all of the above with some valiant defensive effort from all the boys to keep the game tight. It looked as though we would head into the first quarter all square with one of the strongest teams in the league until guess who (Jacob) up to pick out the top corner give City a 5-4 lead.
As has been the way this season after a fantastic quarter from Dr Jekyll, the team’s alternate persona (let’s call him Mr Hyde) surfaced, and the middle half was lost (say it quietly) 16-1 making the score 22-4 going into the final quarter. Apologies for the short account but such was the chaos that unfolded this Men’s captain has conveniently decided to forget the details apart from a lovely goal off the right wing from Mr Wilkes.
However, the final quarter arrived and with it…. Dr Jekyll (cue cheering). A couple of quick goals from Soton city were quickly rebuffed by Alex and Til before Sam Dalton showed all his class to put us in the lead (sort of). It was all going swimmingly (bah dum tsssss) before a final flourish saw the city boys score again and the match ended 7-25.
MOTM: Sam Ellis is goal for a bloody unreal final quarter showing us that we are in good hands next year despite the devastating loss of Mr Bennalick.
