Location: Jubilee Sports Centre
Score: 7-11
Date: 10/11/2021
SUPWC women’s team return to the pool for their first home match of the season against King’s College team. Despite the late start to the match the girls played an excellent game against a very strong team. We are extremely proud of the team, considering the circumstances we played under- a few of the girls being ill. A particular well done to those of the team who had never played competitively before- despite the loss we were very impressed by your perseverance!
After successfully tackling the embarrassing issue of our lack of team hats, our newly elected team captain Katie gave us a short but inspiring team talk and led a warmup. Energy and excitement were high after we won the coin toss- but this was short lived as kings immediately gained possession at the start of the first quarter and scored within the first 20 seconds, and then again after 5 minutes. Despite feeling slightly more defeated when Katie’s first penalty went wide rebounding off the post, she quickly made it up by scoring the next one into the bottom right corner. After a close save from goalie Antonia, Katie fired it again into the goal leaving the score 3-2 after the first quarter.
After a tiring and disappointing second quarter, the score stood at 7-3 and we were back in the shallow end to continue with an impressive third quarter. Our excellent defence and breaks away from players allowed us to win the quarter 2-1 after 2 more excellent goals from our captain, Katie. The third quarter was also made more intense by the wrapping of the other team’s captain following a brutality against Katie on goal. The lengthy debate held about the decision allowed our players to take a breather and prepare for the last quarter. It safe to say all our players did very well against a very tough team.
Despite the score we left in high spirits and had some great take away points for future matches. It was nice to see some freshers having their first match and the loss was soon forgotten after a few drinks at Stag’s!
Man of the match– Katie, for scoring all 7 goals.
Dick of the day– The hats, for not showing up at the pool.
