Portsmouth sunk as Southampton soars to round 2 (04/12)

In a game that will go down as a statement of intent in the National Trophy, the big boys and a
pack of eager freshers, took to the water to dismantle Portsmouth with a staggering2 7-1
victory.
The match began with Southampton hitting the water with energy and precision. John
opened the game by winning the swim off, flying past the Portsmouth defence and scoring
just 15 seconds into the game, setting the tone for what would be a relentless offensive
performance. Daniel Bourne and Fernando Alvarez quickly followed suit, adding to the tally,
with Fernando bagging an impressive hattrick in the first quarter alone. Ed and Daniel
Ammon also got in on the action, ensuring Southampton ended the quarter with an imposing
8-0 lead.
The second quarter saw Southampton continue their dominance with Finn striking first this
quarter, followed by Fernando making the most of a Portsmouth exclusion, Howard and Ed
each added to the scoreline, with Daniel Ammon ending the quarter on a high note with two
stunning goals. By half time, Southampton had built an insurmountable 16-0 lead.
The third quarter wasn’t without drama, Fernando’s theatrical leap out of the water— complete with an appeal to the referee— earned the team a yellow card. Despite this hiccup,
Howard got the team back on track with an impressive strike. Daniel Bourne ensured
Southampton stayed in control converting 2 more goals, leaving Southampton with an
unassailable lead of 19-0.
The final quarter saw the scoring bonanza continue. Daniel Ammon started strong with two
quick goals, and Hadyn joined the fun getting his first goal in SUWPC, unfortunately a unique
defensive move from Hayden lead to a penalty, which Portsmouth’s B8 converted for their lone goal of the match. Unfazed, Southampton responded with strikes from Finn, Ed,
Fernando, and a second goal this quarter from Finn to close the game. The match ended with
a final score of 27-1.
With this decisive win, Southampton progresses to Round 2 in the open National Trophy,
where they will play the winners of the Surrey 1’s v Baths 2’s game.
