Men’s 1st vs Bournemouth 18/03/14

11 of SUWPC’s 1st team made the quick trip over to Bournemouth on Tuesday evening, for the first game of the year against Bournemouth.

After warming up in the shallow end (with its huge goal), Soton were feeling confident that they could overturn their recent spate of bad form and get a win. The first quarter was fairly even, with two goals being scored by both teams, with Divall and Connor finding the back of the deep end goal with well-placed lobs.

The second quarter saw the swim-off narrowly lost, but started well, with Connor putting in another goal to put us ahead at 2-3. Later in the quarter, we were unable to capitalise on a man-up advantage (an annoyingly common occurrence in recent games, despite plenty of practice in training).  After a goal from Bournemouth brought the game back level, Richard scored his first of a hatrick to pull the lead back. Unfortunately, another goal was conceded leaving the scoreline at 5-4 at the halfway point.

The third quarter was a disaster for SUWPC in every way other than the swim-off being won; with 3 unanswered goals being let in, and us conceding a major (which we fortunately defended well and prevented a goal), we fell far behind.

Despite this set back, SUWPC didn’t give up, and the fourth quarter was our best, with 4 goals being scored, bringing us frustratingly close to winning the game. Our passing was much more accurate, and we finally started to shoot more confidently. However, it wasn’t to be, and Bournemouth pulled another back which left the final scoreline at a 9-8 loss.

The next challenge is a home game tomorrow against Gloucester, SUWPC will try their hardest to pull out another win after defeating Gloucester away recently.
